Why one job ended up with three names

The confusion comes from two different worlds using two different words for the exact same tool.

When a contractor says “coring”

On a commercial or ICI site, the crew running the machine calls it a core drill, and the plug it removes is a “core.” So the mechanical contractor asks for “coring,” the drawings call out “cored penetrations,” and the invoice reads “core drilling.” It is trade shorthand — the industry body is literally the Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association (CSDA) — and it has been standard language on job sites for decades.

When a homeowner says “drilling”

Someone who needs a hole through a basement wall for a dryer vent or a new sump line does not think in trade terms. They think, “I need someone to drill through concrete,” and they search “concrete drilling near me.” Same hole, same diamond bit, different phrasing. If a quote you receive mentions coring when you expected “drilling,” you are looking at the right service.

What concrete drilling is actually used for

Nearly every hole we drill exists to let something pass through solid concrete — a pipe, a wire, a duct, or an anchor. The common uses line up neatly by trade:

• Plumbing — floor drains, sump lines, risers, and sanitary penetrations through slabs and foundation walls.
• Electrical — conduit sleeves and cable runs between floors or through fire-rated walls.
• HVAC — round openings for ductwork, refrigerant lines, and exhaust or intake vents.
• Anchoring and structural — dowel holes, rebar doweling, and openings for post-installed anchors.
• Testing — core samples pulled for lab strength testing or to confirm slab thickness.

Why the term matters when you request a quote

Here is where the vocabulary gap can cost time and money. When you ask for a price, the label you use tells us very little on its own — the details are what matter. To quote a hole accurately, we need:

• The diameter and depth (or the wall or slab thickness).
• Whether it is a floor, wall, or overhead hole — drilling up into a ceiling is a different job than drilling down.
• Whether there is rebar, post-tension cable, or a live utility hiding in the concrete.
• Site access, and how many holes you need in total.

Notice that none of those questions depend on whether you say drilling or coring. So do not worry about using the “correct” word — describe the hole, and we will sort out the terminology.
